Hackney is situated in East London in the London Borough of Hackney. Hackney is believed to have got its name from Anglo-Saxon origins. The old English word "Haca's ey" means "island of Haca" or "hook-shaped island".

Like a lot of London, Hackney took significant damage during the bombing raids of World War II. Post-war, this led to the area undergoing much redevelopment and modernization. In recent decades, Hackney has seen young professionals, artists, and creatives move into the area.
